This is a sliding tray that rides on the Ikea Kallax drawer walls and is also convertible into an organizer sitting inside the Kallax drawer. But the main point of it is that this 275mm tray is printable on a 200mm bed.

My wife asked me for drawer organizers so that she could keep some of the Kallax drawers better organized. Anyone who has the Ikea Kallax drawers knows, they do not extend out well so it is difficult to organize inside the drawers. These boxes/trays work super and give you multiple options when using them with the Kallax drawers.

You can configure them to sit on top of the drawer sides and slide back and forth. Or, you can configure them to sit inside the drawer walls. In the later configuration, they can also nest together should you want to use them like that.

The Design

The complete assembly is made up of 3 parts, the box, the foot and the connector/accent. You print each of those parts twice.

I used a honeycomb bottom in the box for several reasons not the least of which is that I like it. But it also permitted a thicker bottom and that in turn allowed me to design the nesting honeycombs that join the two halves together. With those connected only the top needs to be joined and then a stronger container is formed.

The tops are connected by two accent pieces each with barbed protrusions on the inner side. Those connectors flex over the walls of the boxes to join them.

No fasteners, adhesives or hardware is required.

I have tried to make my main print settings visible on the Cura screenshot but in case they are difficult to read I have summarized them again here…

Minimum Bed Size Required: 200 mm

Material: I choose to use PETG for its durability and flexibility.

My Setup:
Nozzle = 0.4mm

My Settings:
Layer height = 0.2mm
Line width = 0.45mm
Wall count = 4 (1.6mm)
Infill = 40%

Support:
Designed to print without support.

Print Orientation: As shown in the screenshot(s).

Assembly Notes

Connect the two halves of the boxes together with a slight twist to nest the male honeycomb extensions into the female side on the opposing box. Once they are generally located, use a strong and flat object to press them into place.

With the two sides connected at the bottom, place an accent part over the wall (ensure the top lip is towards the outside, and press down until it snaps into place.

The feet can be installed in either of two orientations. In the first orientation, the foot extends outward and this allows the completed box to slide on the Kallax drawer sides. In the alternative orientation, the feet extend inward and this allows the boxes to nest together.

No fasteners, adhesives or hardware is required.

Future

I feel like this was successful enough to consider making larger and multi-sectional assemblies in this fashion. I am also thinking that rather than containers this same technique could be used for walls and matts or similar structures. I need to think about it for a while.
