BevvyShade3

I feel like this is one of my least appreciated designs but one of my personal favourites. Mostly because it is really fun and then also because it actually works. I don’t do the sun myself but I do like being outside and sitting on our patio enjoying a cold drink in the summer. And, even barbecuing I often have a beverage nearby. Inevitably the beverage ends up in the sun’s gaze and next thing you know… you have a warm beer (or glass of white wine). That is where the BevvyShade comes into play…

The BevvyShade is essentially a drink coaster with a sunshade attached to it. Just drop your drink onto the coaster and rotate it for optimal shade. The lack of sun on your drink slows the inevitable cooling – keeping your drink colder longer.

It is quite a simple design but with this 3rd generation, I now have built-in flip-out legs to stabilize the BevvyShade in the event of wind. These legs are print-in-place and no hardware, fasteners or adhesives are needed.

With this generation, I have also made it slightly shorter. It is now 242mm tall so it can be printed on many common-size printers.

Printing

I have tried to make my main print settings visible on the Cura screenshot but in case they are difficult to read I have summarized them again here…

Material: I choose to use PETG for its durability and flexibility.

My Setup:
Nozzle = 0.4mm

My Settings:
Layer height = 0.2mm
Line width = 0.4mm
Wall count = 4 (1.6mm)
Infill = 40%
Ironing = ON

Support:
Designed to print without additional print support.

Print Orientation: As shown in the screenshot(s).

Assembly Notes

No assembly or post-print processing is required other than removing the 4 pieces of built-in print support as shown in the accompanying illustration.

    Maybe have a series of hinged Air Vents in the BevvyShade to allow the wind to pass through from either direction. When upright, with the hinge being on the horizontal & hinged at the top, the vents won’t allow any/enough sun to get through to the vessel/contents but will easily swing open to allow any gusts/wind to pass through.

    I can’t confirm the following as I never leave a drink in the sun for long enough but…the other thing that direct Sunlight does to alcohol is an effect referred to as ‘Light Struck’ or being ‘Skunked’ due to the Ultra Violet Rays from the sun that can affect the flavour. Hence why most Wines, Beers etc are stored in non Clear glass to preserve the intended flavour.

      Yes, this was a fun design simply for my friends drinking beer or white wine on our patio on a summer day with their drinks the sun. It was really just a fun play on the standard coaster by adding a sunshade. I wanted it to be a fast and simple print thus the minimal moving parts and no assembly. The swing out back legs are design to stabilize against wind but we found that even that is not needed when a drink is in the coaster. And, having a closed wall reduces airflow around the drink (marginally for sure). Since their drinks are already in the sun, the lightstruck effect already accepted, the BevvySteady can help if a UV filament is used (such as ASA). Since posting this design I have created my DrinkColder which for my buddies who drink beer is by far the preferred product. But for sure all of these are just novelties and not needed in a meaningful way.
