Light is one of the most misunderstood parts of indoor growing — not because it’s complicated, but because small mistakes early on can have long-lasting effects.
This page explains how to think about light when using the Logical Grow Platform (LGP), including light height, duration, and how to adjust as plants grow.
Why Light Matters So Much Early On
When seedlings emerge, light becomes the primary driver of healthy growth.
Too little light results in:
- Tall, weak, “leggy” seedlings
- Thin stems that struggle later
Too much light (or light too close) can cause:
- Leaf curl
- Bleaching
- Stalled growth
The goal is strong, compact growth, not fast growth.
Light Type (What the LGP Is Designed For)
The LGP is designed around common, flat LED grow panels — the kind widely available and efficient for indoor seed starting.
These provide:
- Even light coverage
- Low heat output
- Predictable intensity
Exact wattage and spectrum vary by panel, but for early growth, consistency and distance matter more than raw power.
Light Height: The Most Important Adjustment
One of the core features of the LGP is precise, repeatable light height adjustment.
General Guidelines
- Start with the light close to the seedlings once they emerge
- Adjust upward as plants grow
- Make small changes rather than large jumps
The adjustable posts move the hood approximately 6 mm (¼”) per full rotation, allowing fine control.
If seedlings stretch upward:
- Lower the light slightly
If leaves curl or look stressed:
- Raise the light slightly
Light Duration (Photoperiod)
For most common garden plants:
- 14–16 hours per day is ideal
- Consistency matters more than exact timing
- Use a timer if possible
More light is not always better. Continuous 24-hour lighting is unnecessary and can stress plants.
Using Timers and Smart Switches for Lighting
A timer or smart (Wi-Fi) switch is strongly recommended for controlling grow lights. Consistent light duration is more important than exact timing, and automation removes the risk of forgetting to turn lights on or off.
A common and effective schedule is 16 hours on and 8 hours off, which works well for most seedlings and early indoor growth. Once set, there’s usually no need to adjust this daily. As plants grow, focus on adjusting light height, not duration.
Light Changes Over Time
As plants develop:
- Seedlings need close, gentle light
- Larger plants tolerate slightly more distance
- Growth rate increases once true leaves appear
Adjust light height gradually — the LGP is designed to make this easy without rebuilding your setup.
Indoor vs Outdoor Planning
If plants will eventually go outdoors:
- Indoor light does not replace sunlight
- Seedlings will still need to be hardened off
- Avoid pushing excessive indoor growth too early
The goal indoors is healthy starts, not full-size plants.
Common Light Mistakes
- Leaving lights too high “just in case”
- Forgetting to adjust height as plants grow
- Running lights too long
- Chasing brightness instead of consistency
If unsure, err on the side of:
- Slightly closer light
- Slightly shorter duration
Plants recover more easily from mild underexposure than from stress.
Final Thoughts on Light
Light is not something to “set and forget.”
The LGP gives you the ability to respond as plants grow — use that flexibility. Small, frequent adjustments lead to stronger plants than big corrections later.
