Two separate processes are required to be executed before the StashCan Series 2 can be opened. The first step is to enter the combination lock code into the bottom of the can correctly. The second is executing the sequential procedure of the top correctly and then unscrewing the top.
Entering the Combination Lock Code
The lock behaves similarly to most conventional 3-digit combination locks except that there is no shackle to open once the correct code is entered. The following is the method to open the lock:
Step 1: Turn the Can upside down so that the Lock Dial is up.
Step 2: Turn the Lock Dial several times (at least 2 full 360° rotations) clockwise to reset the tumblers (the Lock Disks). Then continue turning clockwise to the first digit of your code and stop. For example, if your lock code is “1-2-3” then stop on the number 1.

Step 3: Then rotate counterclockwise past 0 to the second digit of your code and stop. For example, if your lock code is “1-2-3” then stop on the number 2.

Step 4: Lastly, rotate clockwise again, to the 3rd digit of your code and stop. For example, if your lock code is “1-2-3” then stop on the number 3.

At this point, all the Key Disks should be aligned which will allow the Gravity Latch to slide downward internally when the can is re-oriented upward. And, that makes it possible for the lid of the can to be removed using the instructions that follow.
Opening the Lid
The lid of the can can only be removed when the lock code is successfully entered as described above. Then the following steps must be executed in sequence to release the lid and allow it to be removed:
Step 1: With the can oriented upward, gently press down the section of the lid which represents the mouth opening of the can [A].

Step 2: With the mouth opening depressed, rotate the pull-tab [B] counter-clockwise 90°.

Step 3: Rotate the entire Top Assembly (the lid) clockwise 360°.

Step 4: Remove the lid; if you are unable to open the lid, the combination lock is not in the open state or the Gravity Latch has not been allowed to fall down away from the Top Assembly.

Anti-Picking Mechanism
Lock pickers generally use a “feeling” technique to feel the tumblers of a combination lock. However, I have intentionally designed this lock so that the tumblers can only be turned when the can is inverted. When the can is inverted the tumblers will meet no resistance from the latch (the Gravity Latch). Therefore there is nothing to feel.
If a person attempts to feel the lock by testing it upright from under the can, the Gravity Latch will lock the tumblers preventing them from turning.
